The Bag That Became a Part of My Life

Fabric scraps are treasures to me.
Whenever I make something, I can never bring myself to throw away the small pieces of fabric left behind.
Many of these fabrics are vintage kimono and other Japanese textiles that are no longer made or sold today. Some have already lived a long life before they came to me. When I look at even the smallest piece, I can feel a sense of history in it.
So I keep them.
This time, I decided to use some of those treasured scraps to make something just for myself: a large tote bag.
I tend to carry a lot with me, so I wanted a bag that would really suit the way I live. I made the shoulder straps slightly wider so that the bag would be comfortable to carry and easy to reach into. Inside, I added a bottle holder to keep my bottle upright instead of rolling around at the bottom of the bag.
It is a bag made entirely around my own needs.
But making it was far from simple.
Every scrap was a different shape and size. I laid them out, moved them around, cut them, overlocked the edges, pressed them, and stitched them together.
Then I looked at the arrangement again.
I changed my mind.
I moved pieces.
I thought about it some more.
There were so many small decisions along the way.
After around 13 hours of work, the bag was finally finished.
While making it, I realized that the process somehow reminded me of life.
Not everything fits perfectly at first. Sometimes you have to change direction. Sometimes you think something belongs in one place, only to discover that it works better somewhere else.
You think, hesitate, change your mind, and keep going.
And eventually, all those different pieces become something whole.
Maybe that is why this bag feels like more than just a tote bag to me.
It is my life bag.
Every piece of fabric carries its own history, and now all of those different pieces have come together to begin another story with me.
There will never be another bag exactly like this one.
Even if I tried, I couldn't make it again.
The fabrics are different. The shapes are different. The decisions I made in that moment would be different too.
It is truly one of a kind.
And as I continue through my own life, this bag will come along with me.
Perhaps it will become worn, faded, or stained over time.
That's okay.
I made it with my own hands, from pieces of fabric I couldn't bear to throw away.
And that is exactly why I want to keep using it for a very long time.
